Beyond the Legislation—A Request for Real Dialogue

Beyond the Legislation—A Request for Real Dialogue

For over 30 years, I have watched the sun rise on a profession that is as misunderstood as it is essential. Like many in my industry, I am not looking for a fight. I am looking for a Monday morning where our value isn't a debate, but a recognized asset to the California judiciary.

The recent defeat of SB 1026 shouldn’t be seen as a "stop" sign, but as a "yield" sign an opportunity for legislators to pause and finally sit down with the professionals who know this industry best.

We are ready for a conversation that leaves egos at the door:

• Expertise, Not Ideology: We have managed billions in liability and thousands of cases with success rates that government programs struggle to match. We want to share why the "human anchor" works.

• Data-Driven Solutions: Our industry operates on the front lines of risk. We see the nuances that a pretrial algorithm misses. We aren't here to condemn reform; we are here to ensure reform is grounded in reality.

• Common Goals: At the end of the day, we all want the same thing, a justice system that is fair, a public that is safe, and a court calendar that is respected.

To the policy makers in Sacramento: My door is open. No attitudes, no condemnation just a professional conversation about how we can work together to protect the integrity of our legal system. It’s time we stop legislating in a vacuum and start talking to the people who actually do the work.

Let’s try these options:

• Shifts the Narrative: It moves you from "opponent" to "consultant." It’s much harder to attack someone who is reasonably asking for a seat at the table.

• Highlights Longevity: Referencing my 30 plus years of experience establishes me as a senior authority.

• Focuses on Results: It emphasizes that my goals (public safety/accountability) are the same as theirs, even if the methods differ.

This brings me back to the start, I don’t have to prove why I belong at the table. I don’t have to state all my perspectives. What I want is the opportunity to teach about the profession I love.
