The key to successful underwriting in the Bail Industry
Anyone can chase the premium, I chase the Anchors.
In the high stakes world of bail, risk isn’t a gamble it’s a
calculation. I’ve learned that the difference between a
successful year, and a total wipeout isn’t found in a credit
score. It’s found in the gravity that keeps a person grounded.
My philosophy has always been Risk over Volume. While most
are blinded by the high monetary rewards of a large bond, I’m
looking at how to matriculate through the potential for loss. I
don’t just underwrite assets; I underwrite Human Anchors!
I’ve heard other bondsmen say, "I didn’t take the deal because
there’s no equity in the home." That’s a failure of VISION.
In my world, Sentimental Equity is often more powerful than a
bank appraisal. A family home owned for 40 years might have
zero market value, but if it’s where that defendant’s mother
sleeps, it is an unbreakable bond.
To calculate risk accurately, you have to find the emotional
ties:
• Who relies on this person?
• Who do they fear disappointing?
• What connects them to their home beyond a zip code?
When the cost of flight is the permanent displacement of their
own bloodline, the risk is no longer a threat, it’s a calculated
opportunity. By prioritizing these anchors over raw volume,
we’ve maintained a loss ratio under 1% because we don't just
write paper.
