Underwriter Reality
The Underwriter’s Reality
At 2:00 AM, the rules don't change, only the pressure does. If you are the "stop gap," you are the difference between a booked premium and a lost client.
• Persistence vs. Annoyance: Six calls at 2:00 AM isn't "annoying", it’s business. If the agent is calling, it’s because a deal is sitting on the desk and they need a "yes" or "no" to close it.
• The "One Foot Out" Rule: In the bail industry, speed is a competitive advantage. A client with one foot out the door is a client about to call your competitor. If the underwriter isn't available, the agency is closed, regardless of what the sign on the door says.
• The Role: Being the Underwriter means being the anchor. It is inherently uncomfortable because you carry the risk. If you want the title, you have to be present for the 2:00 AM grind.
Bottom line: If you aren't available to make the hard calls, you aren't underwriting, you're just spectating.
